- Annotation: The phenomenon of empathy has many definitions. All theories devoted to the study of empathy can be combined with a structural-level approach. In our research, we have identified many facts confirming the level structure of the structure of empathy in the conditions of university adaptation among students. The following methods were applied: diagnostics of the level of empathic abilities V.V. Boyko's method ‟Diagnostics of the level of empathic abilities” and M.S. Yurkina's method ‟Adaptation of students to higher education”. The sample was first-year students (n = 100). The novelty of the study is a multidimensional representation of the structure of empathy. The article presents a possible model of the structure of empathy in the conditions of adaptation of students at the university and its description. It consists of the following levels: psychophysiological, emotional, cognitive, metacognitive, conative and synergetic. Not only positive, but also negative relationships between the parameters of empathy and the components of university adaptation have been confirmed. The principles of the negative and positive effects of empathy on the university adaptation of students are explained. The higher the structural and level organization of the phenomenon, the higher the adaptive potential of the individual.
