- Annotation: The article deals with fan culture and analysis of theoretical and empirical studies of the motives for joining it. The existing involvement in romantic fan culture has been confirmed [McLelland, Zhang, Zsila, Demetrovics, Prasannam, Wang, Vorontsov], including partial dissatisfaction of female fans with their role in society or family, in relationship with a romantic partner. Based on the data obtained during the first stage of the empirical study (512 female fans, average age - 27 years (Std. otl. = 2.8)), assumptions were made regarding the reasons and motives for the involvement of Russian women in Asian romantic fandom cultures: 1) high involvement is a kind of "withdrawal - distancing" coping or an ego-defense; 2) some female fans tend to become addicted of participation in the fandom; 3) it is possible that involvement in Asian romantic fan culture contributes to the transformation of gender identity and the requirements of an “ideal romantic partner”.
