Annotation: This study analyzes the relationship between hardiness and cognitive assessment of difficult life situations in students. 298 university students at the age between 17 and 25 years old took part in our research. The diagnostic complex included the “Cognitive Assessment of a Difficult Life Task” test (Bityutskaya & Korneev, 2023), and the “Hardiness Test” (Leontyev & Rasskazova, 2006). The conducted factor analysis (principal component analysis with Varimax rotation) allowed us to identify a two-factor structure explaining 78.72 % of the total data variance. The first factor (57.43 % of explained variance) combined scales from the “Cognitive Assessment of a Difficult Life Task” test, reflecting the perception of a difficult life situation as characterized by a high degree of uncertainty and requiring an immediate, active response. The second factor (21.29 % of explained variance) included scales assessing “unclearness of the situation”, “lack of control over the situation”, and the integrated indicator of “hardiness”. The identified inverse relationship between the level of hardiness and the feeling of being out of control over the situation confirms theoretical propositions about hardiness as a system of beliefs and strategies that mediates the impact of stressful events and helps minimize their negative consequences.
Keywords: hardiness, cognitive assessment of a difficult life task, students.
